Feature Story

San Francisco

By Eric And Emily Pasour

The Alternative Travel Magazine doesn’t pretend to be an all inclusive travel guide. If you want that you will have to buy a Lonely Planet, Frommers or something of the like. However, every once in a while we will give a few suggestions for things to do on your travels. This month we spotlight the Queen of the Pacific, San Francisco.

San Francisco has a reputation for being a city that is ultra liberal, politically correct to a fault, and full of elitist attitudes. With regards to the topic of political correctness,

I don’t know if they invented it here, but they certainly have perfected it. As far as their elitist attitudes, I only need to give one example. The nickname, Frisco, commonly used by many non-bay area dwellers does not sit well with the locals. It seems to be not good enough for the people of San Francisco. It appears that they all got together and came up with their own name for their beloved city. “The City” is what they decided upon. It’s not as nifty as "G-Town"or"Nawleans", but hey if it’s what they like.
On the positive side, San Francisco IS one the most beautiful cities that I have ever seen. Its views are incredible, whether you are checking out the sites in the city or looking out across the bay. You are sure to be impressed. Enjoy one of the street side cafes, not only for the great food, but for some of the best people watching in the world. There is something for everyone in SF. There is a vibrant music scene with many live venues, tons of art from museums to small galleries, the Giants play baseball right on the bay and the diversity and abundance of restaurants is mind boggling. Considering the convenience and relative affordability of public transit if you are bored in SF then you aren’t trying very hard. We know that the city is very expensive and that’s why we have found a few fun things for you to do that are either free or very cheap.
View from Randall Park

First, you can go check out the best views of downtown and the bay. Go to Corona Heights just above the Randall Museum. From atop the rocks there you will find the most stunning views of the city and the surrounding bay area and it’s free. When you are finished there walk across the road to Buena Vista Park and snap few shots of the Golden Gate Bridge from that vantage point. To get there, take Market away from the Embarcadero, Turn right on 14 th, left on Roosevelt Way. The Park will be on your left at the corner of Museum way. If it is difficult to find parking on the street, you can take a left on Museum Way and park at the Randall Museum where you can climb the stairs around the side to the park.

Next go grab a bite of cheap authentic Chinese food at Sam Wo’s. With this restaurant’s 100 years of tradition and low cost it makes it a must stop. It is a small restaurant that you have to enter through the kitchen then go up the stairs to one of two small dining rooms. There is nothing fancy about it but what do you expect for the price. The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license so if you want to enjoy an adult beverage you will have to bring it yourself. Sam Wo’s stays open late so it so it makes a great stop on the way home after a late night on the town. It’s located at 813Washington Street at the corner of Grant. They are open from 11 am till 3am.

Finally, head towards the Fisherman’s Wharf; check out the street venders and performers. I know, I know, it IS the touristy part of town, but even if you think you are a hard-core traveler and you don’t do the touristy thing, you still need to go and check it out. There are still a few things that are worth seeing. For example, where else can you see a man dressed as a dog sitting with dogs dressed as humans? Or take your pick of five silver painted “mechanical” men doing the robot for change. But the best attraction of them all is the “World Famous Bushman”. He has been doing his thing for 26 years. He is not to be missed. For more information on the Bushman, see the “Bushman Interview” or you can see him in action on our "Bushman Video".
